Callout for Winter Trail Groomers

Callout for Winter Trail Groomers

November 19, 2021

We got spoiled this year with a longer than usual season of great dirt, but alas, onto Winter we look, which means time to start talking about grooming.

Last year we piloted a grooming program in partnership with the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park, and it went superbly. So well that we purchased our own Snowdog and are looking to expand grooming operations this year to include trails outside of the CNCPP, including Loki, Fun Forest, and more. This brings us to you! We’re looking for volunteers who want to help us groom the trails.

So, what’s involved, you ask. Well, unfortunately, it’s not as simple as just getting on the groomer and hitting go. The Snowdog, while not a massive machine, is a physically demanding one to operate. Before people get the green light to get out and groom, some requirements, along with some recommendations, need to be fulfilled.

What's Required

  • Attend a 2-hour training session at the Canmore Nordic Centre, which will take place on a weekday morning.
  • A minimum of standard first aid certification.
  • Weekday availability. Much of the grooming, especially at the CNCPP, will happen during weekday hours.

What's Recommended

  • A decent level of physical fitness. As mentioned before, the Snowdog is a relatively demanding machine to push around. Folks with injuries or other physical impediments will likely not have the best experience on it. To protect people, and the machine, we recommend groomers be comfortable with a high level of physical activity.
  • Back-country experience. Groomers will be required to head out independently, sometimes in remote areas, so being comfortable in the back-country is recommended.

What's a Bonus

  • Prior grooming experience. Naturally, any experience grooming trails, be it for biking, or skiing will be a huge plus.
  • Mechanical aptitude and/or experience with small engines. The Snowdog can be a finicky machine at times. Being comfortable troubleshooting problems with the machine on the trail is a big plus.
